The Riverland region lies within the central-eastern section of South Australia covering an area of approximately 24 000 sq kms. It encompasses the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Berri Barmera, Loxton Waikerie, Renmark Paringa, plus Unincorporated Riverland and adjoining towns of Morgan and Blanchetown. There is an estimated population of 35,000.
The region is relatively compact and has five main towns of similar size. The Sturt Highway passes through the region, carrying a significant amount of interstate traffic. The River Murray is a tourism feature, as well as supporting large areas of irrigated horticulture. Dry land farming is practiced in the surrounding districts.
